American Teens in Spring Breakers

Two films featuring similar enthusiasm for the spiritual joys of consumer materialism came out this year: Jinming Guo's "Tiny Times" and Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers. Though clearly sharing the same idea of superficial happiness the characters depicted in the two stills above help us put these films in historical context and perspective. If in China the plastic dream is on the rise, in the US it's hangover time; the question being how long will it take before the four smiling Chinese ladies will end up looking like their American peers.
